Timber windows lend a distinctive character to a property. So, while there has been a trend in recent years to replace traditional wood windows with double glazed uPVC units, there is still a demand for either renovating existing timber windows or replacing fitted uPVC windows with timber.

Renovation works may include adapting an old box sash, casement and non-opening window ready for double glazed window units to replace the existing single glazed panes.  A window maker's knowledge of the different types of window glass is also very important because, on occasion, glass is specified which has an authentic period look, along with its characteristic imperfections. Obtaining and fitting these expensive, specialised types of glass is an essential skill if a window restorer is to work on historical properties.

Such windows may be circular or arched and, because they are unique in design and size, they cannot be purchased off the shelf. To produce such a window needs the skills of a craftsperson.
